1. Lý thuyết thì quá khứ hoàn thành (Past perfect tense)
1.1 Cách sử dụng quá khứ hoàn thành
- Diễn tả một hoạt động đã xảy ra và hoàn thành trước một hành động khác trong quá khứ.
Ví dụ: Hoa had gone to school before Hong came.
- Diễn tả một hành động đã xảy ra và kéo dài tới một thời điểm nhất định trong quá khứ.
Ví dụ: They had had that motorbike for 5 years before it broke down.
- Diễn tả một hành động xảy ra trước một thời điểm nhất định trong quá khứ.
Ví dụ: Han had traveled to VN before 2019
- Diễn tả hành động điều kiện không có thực trong quá khứ trong câu điều kiện loại III.
Ví dụ: If Nga had known that, she would have acted differently.
- Dùng để thể hiện sự thất vọng về sự việc nào đó trong quá khứ. (thường dùng cấu trúc điều ước trong quá khứ.)
1.2 Dấu hiệu nhận biết thì quá khứ hoàn thành
Một số từ xuất hiện trong câu sử dụng thì quá khứ hoàn thành cần chú ý là:
- Until then
- By the time
- Prior to that time
- before
- after
- for
- as soon as
- by
- by the end of + time in the past
1.3 Công thức của thì quá khứ hoàn thành
- Câu khẳng định: S + had + VpII
- Câu phủ định: S + hadn’t + VpII
- Câu nghi vấn: Had + S + VpII ?
