1. Các quy tắc đánh trọng âm trong tiếng Anh
1.1 Cách đánh trọng âm của từ có 2 âm tiết
Quy tắc 1: Đa số các danh từ, tính từ có hai âm tiết thì trọng âm thường rơi vào âm tiết thứ nhất.
Ví dụ:
- center /ˈsentər/
- apple /ˈæp.əl/
- angry /´æηgri/
- happy/ ˈhæpi/…
Quy tắc 2: Phần lớn các động từ và giới từ có 2 âm tiết thì trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết thứ hai.

between /bɪˈtwiːn/
among /əˈmʌŋ/…
Quy tắc 3: Một số động từ khi có âm tiết thứ hai là âm ngắn thì trọng âm sẽ rơi vào âm tiết thứ nhất.

Quy tắc 4: Danh từ hay tính từ có chứa nguyên âm dài ở âm tiết thứ hai thì trọng âm rơi vào chính âm tiết đó.

Quy tắc 5: Các từ số đếm trong tiếng Anh sẽ được nhấn trọng âm ở đuôi teen, nếu từ kết thúc bằng đuôi y thì trọng âm rơi ở âm tiết đầu tiên.

1.2 Cách đánh trọng âm của từ có 3 âm tiết trở lên
Quy tắc 6: Với danh từ có ba âm tiết, nếu âm tiết thứ hai có âm /i/ hoặc /ə/ thì trọng âm sẽ rơi vào âm tiết thứ nhất.

Quy tắc 7: Danh từ, tính từ, động từ khi có âm tiết cuối có chứa âm /i/ hoặc /ə/và kết thúc là phụ âm thì trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết thứ hai.

Quy tắc 8: Các từ có hậu tố là – ic, – ish, – tion, – ance, – ence, – iar, – ical, – sion, – eous, – idle, – ious, – ian, – ience, – id, – ity thì trọng âm sẽ nhấn vào âm tiết ở trước.
Ví dụ:
- nation /ˈneɪʃn/
- similarity /ˌsɪm.ɪˈlær.ə.ti/

Quy tắc 10: Các từ thêm hậu tố – en, – ful, – able, – er/or, – hood, – ing, – ment, – ship, – ness, – ous, – less thì trọng âm vẫn giữ như ở từ gốc.

Quy tắc 11: Các từ có hậu tố là – phy, – graphy, – cy, – al, – ate, – gy, – ity thì trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết thứ 3 từ vị trí cuối đếm lên.

Quy tắc 12: Các từ kết thúc là các đuôi: how, what, where,… thì nhấn trọng âm vào âm tiết thứ nhất.

Quy tắc 13: Các từ chứa vert, test, tain, tract, sist, cur, vent, self thì trọng âm sẽ rơi vào chính các âm tiết này.

2. Trọng âm tiếng Anh trong câu
Trong tiếng Anh, không chỉ từ mang trọng âm mà trọng âm cũng thường xuất hiện trong câu. Trọng âm của một câu sẽ rơi vào từ được phát âm to, nhấn mạnh để thể hiện thông điệp, ý muốn muốn truyền tải. Việc nhấn trọng âm p sẽ giúp tạo nên âm điệu, mang đến sắc thái trong giao tiếp một cách tự nhiên.
Ví dụ:
She is my girlfriend. (Nhấn mạnh đối tượng, chính cô ấy chứ không phải ai khác.)
2.1 Các từ có chứa nội dung (content words): được nhấn trọng âm
Chúng ta sẽ thường nhấn trọng âm vào các từ mang ý nghĩa chính, quan trọng và thể hiện nội dung trong câu. Cụ thể:
- Động từ chính: sell, bought, listening…
- Danh từ: car, weather, flower,…
- Tính từ: beautiful, cheap, rich,…
- Trạng từ: happily, quickly,…
- Trợ động từ (dạng phủ định): don’t, can’t,…
- Đại từ chỉ định: this, that, those, these
- Từ để hỏi: Who, Where, How,…

2.2 Từ thuộc cấu trúc (structure words): không nhận trọng âm
- Đại từ: we, they, he…
- Giới từ: by, on, at…
- Mạo từ: a, an, the…
